About us

Who we are

The Boston Young Artists are a group of rising playwrights, actors, directors, designers, and all other theatre makers in the Boston Area that are passionate about new work and the stories that have yet to be told.

We work to uplift the voices and talents of university aged students, recent graduates, and all artists who have incredible abilities to share, but limited platforms to share them in. We operate as a professional performing arts organization in Eastern Massachusetts, but every part of our organization from volunteers up through board leadership is comprised of young professional artists.

The future theatre is here, and the Boston Young Artists are ready to show the world how great it will be.

The purpose of playing is, to hold as 'twere the mirror up to nature: to show virtue her feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time his form and pressure.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SHAPING A BETTER WORLD begins within ourselves. The theatre truly does have the power to "hold the mirror up to nature", and yet the mirror only reflects clear and true as the one who holds it. We are dedicated to building a culture within the Boston Young Artists that uplifts all voices and creates a safe, welcome space for all artists.

Our promise

Diversity, equity & inclusion

We commit to upholding an inclusive learning, working, and creating environment where diverse
perspectives are recognized, respected, and seen as a source of strength. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR COMMITMENTS TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION HERE.

we work to live, not live to work.

We love theatre, but that does not mean it should consume our lives. We make the commitment to never ask more than a 40 hour work week for any of our company members. Rehearsals, builds, production meetings, and other events will not exceed 8 hours. Company members will not work later than 11pm on any rehearsal or build. We will uphold the equity standard for break times, and strive to provide each company member with two consecutive free days every week.

equitable compensation

To the best of our ability, we will compensate all company members for each of our events. Compensation will be rated based on the time a person dedicates to the project. No budgetary planning for any production shall exclude compensation for workers. All volunteers on a project shall be compensated through non-monetary means and in whichever way is most appropriate and financially feasible.

communication, honesty & transparency

Communication is the lifeblood of  a healthy organization. We commit to open and honest communication with all our company members, volunteers, board members and affiliates. We commit to creating a work culture where members are empowered to share their needs, ideas, and concerns. We are better together.

Accessable performances

We do not benefit from theatre making in a bubble. We make the commitment to making theatre the most accessible form of storytelling for all people. We will not prevent cost, disability, or geography from preventing a person from experiencing our stories. We commit to Pay What You Can performances, accessible accommodations at all productions, and reasonable ticket prices.
